2007 Galleries

Flrunners.com Middle School T&F State Championship : Photos 6514-7527 (D40) and 6079-6246 (D70), 1714MB total, have been uploaded. They (hopefully) auto-sorted chronologically.
D40 photos 6801-6930 (from the Girls'/Boys' 3000m runs) are all overexposed, aka ruined. I accidentally moved the shooting mode dial from aperture priority to manual while I was scampering back and forth across the infield during the Girls' race from the 1Km point to the 1600m. (Nikon unfortunately moved that "dial of photographic death" from the left side on the D70 to under my right thumb on the D40.) Anyway, I didn't notice my faux pas till after the conclusion of the Boys' 3Km. Doh! I'm pretty sure even Photoshop won't help with these. They're getting uploaded anyway. You can get 3Km splits from the exif metadata. So those fried photos may be useful in that way.

Photos 5285-5541 (D70, 344MB) and 5333-6384 (D40, 1.49GB) have been uploaded.
I've done a minimal cull of the worst photos. Expect some blurred and poorly exposed shots to get posted anyway. It's like a photo documentary, ok?
The big 70-200VR 2.8 is out of commission. So quality takes yet another hit. Thank goodness (photographically speaking) most of this meet was conducted in blazing sunlight. Of course that results in some lens flare and track glare on westward facing shots. 4X8 shots got some wacko looks with the ISO bumped all the way up to 1600. Oh well - beats blur (if I remember to open up the aperture). Might I suggest you download a full-res of anything you've got to have, "Photoshop" it and/or and try Noise Ninja http://www.picturecode.com/ or Neat Image http://www.neatimage.com/

Note that visitors may change the style of the gallery (click the "style" pulldown menu at the TOP of the page). I suggest you try the "ALL THUMBS" style to most quickly find what you might be looking for. If you don't change the gallery style, you may have 86 pages of 15 photos each to wade through.
Alternately, look just above the photos and hover over the little triangle between "Page 1 of 86." A menu will drop down from which you may choose any page in the gallery.

1500m
4x100m
400m
800m
200mH (5 hurdles, Girls AND Boys 30")
200m
4x800m

Chiles HS Capital City Classic : ~900 photos (1348MB) from the SATURDAY, 7 April meet hosted by Chiles High School.
Lots of lens and/or battery misadventures kept me from getting more shots where we would have wanted them. I worked from two cameras. Some will likely get posted out of chronological order. I only did a cursory cull job before posting. So there'll undoubtedly be some out of focus, etc. I'll just stick with the "Well, Granny may want to see it anyway" excuse, ok?
Thanks as always for Chiles Coach Scott Gowan's cooperation in allowing me complete access.
A spring chill with gusty winds made many marks that much more impressive.

FSU Relays : Sorry I didn't get a better angle on much of the competition. Despite requesting and receiving permission from the facilities manager, I was thrown out of the track infield Friday by one of the FSU T&F officials. Gee, I'm uncredentialed and I don't charge folks for these photos. That pretty much defines "unprofessional." I do appreciate the kind words of support from former FSU Coach Terry Long.

More significantly, the area pole vault community lost our best friend today.
Coach Kurt Westfall passed away. Updates have been posted here, detailing the news since his stroke Friday, 23 March:

http://tallahasseetrails.smugmug.com/gallery/1319175

IMPORTANT! You will be better off if you change the gallery "style" (top-right pulldown menu) from the default "smugmug" to ALL THUMBS! If you fail to do this, you'll be wading through as many as 100 pages of shots, 9 to a page.

(Friday) D70 shots courtesy of: Bill Sweeney (3200m photos) and Maria Harper (Boys' HS PV). D40 shots continue to be vexed by some CPU lens glitches. Bear with me till I get the big lens sorted out.

Some captioning/comment coming as I wade through 1333 (1.8GB) of photos from 2 cameras. Photos uploaded are #3617-3865 (D70), and #1237-2339 (D40).
Be aware that some may end up in the gallery out of chronological order. Note to those looking at EXIF data: the D70's clock was about one hour ahead of the D40's.
Last event I was able to photograph was the Boys' 3200m. Had to run to the bus shortly after to beat our curfew back in Tallahassee. So sorry, no 4X400m photos.

IMPORTANT! You will be better off if you change the gallery "style" (top-right pulldown menu) from the default "smugmug" to ALL THUMBS! If you fail to do this, you'll be wading through as many as 149 pages of shots, 9 to a page.

By now, those who've suffered through my galleries know I may just post nearly everything. Including those that any self-respecting photographer would have deleted in-camera. Of course, real photographers have sufficient skills to comprehend concepts like composition, focus, exposure . . . I'm not painting with light here, ok? I'm just a runner with a camera or two, documenting a really nice event, merrily snapping away with semi-cooperative camera gear and zero training.
I don't think much can be done with the "fried" shots or the night-blurred ones. You may wish to try your luck with Photoshop/etc or Noise Ninja/Neat Image:

http://www.picturecode.com/ (Noise Ninja)

http://www.neatimage.com/
If I edit before posting, it takes too long, ok? I do post the full sized shots that I'd set in-camera. I don't normally compress anything any further. So at least you'll have a pretty good-sized lousy looking file to work with!
Away we go.

Jesse Forbes T&F Invitational - Godby HS : I had nearly 1000 shots to go through. Many were not salvageable due to some technical woes. I've uploaded everything anyway, including the overexposed/fried and blurred (night) shots.
Note how the quality falls off rapidly as we move through the meet. The big lens needs to go back to Nikon for repair. And the newer (undamaged) camera body had the battery die early on in the meet. Sweet. (What is this - a MySpace whine session?!)
I fiddled with the overexposed/fried shots. Still bad but they uploaded faster as they're smaller files. Maybe someone's grandma will want to see those, burned or not. Night shots without my flash (didn't have batteries for the flash) are even worse. Same story - uploaded smaller files.
Because I used two cameras interchangeably during some races, certain photos will undoubtedly end up out of sequence. You win a cigar if you can spot those. (Tip: the camera internal clocks were not synchronized before the shoot.)
Remember kids - real photographers (as distinguished from a runner with a camera) actually respect and know how to use their equipment. They don't attempt things like simultaneously getting splits with one hand, while holding a heavy 70-200 2.8 with the other and snapping merrily away, having accidentally bumped the focus area button and multi-selector wheel. Doh!

Note that visitors may change the style of the gallery (click the "style" pulldown menu at the TOP of the page). I suggest you try the "ALL THUMBS" style to most quickly find what you might be looking for. If you don't change the gallery style, you may have 65 pages of 15 photos each to wade through.

Maclay Small Schools T&F Open : SATURDAY, 24 February, Maclay School Track.
As is typical for me, I uploaded the mediocre, the out-of-focus, and the just plain bad. I was busy with the morning's HJ. So, sorry - no photos from the field events, 4X800s, and consolation 1600/4X100/400s.

FEEL FREE to change the gallery "style" (pull-down menu top-right of this page). "All thumbs" style helps navigate through the 420 shots. If you do not change the gallery style, be aware you'll be wading through 28 gallery pages.
Please send me any ID/corrections/suggestions for this gallery.
You may figure "do-it-yourself" splits from the exif data available for all photos. (E.g. Time at split minus Time at start = Split time.)
