Cross Country Course Maps & Photo Tours Galleries

Sunnyhill Farms 5Km : Chiles HS Coach Scott Gowan asked for some assistance with this new course. Here we go...

Listen up, people...STEP ONE: PRINT THE MAP and bring it with you!!
It's very important that folks not wander around areas not in the immediate race course area. No motorized vehicles out of the parking area. Taking a bike from the Barn across the north paved road ~800m over across the Roberts Pond levee (2500m point) is ok. Like this. Just do not wander around off course. Folks live here - we need to respect their privacy. Pick up all of your trash, plus anything extra. When we leave, there should be no evidence an event took place. It would be nice to get invited back for more races. Thanks!
Scroll waaaaaay down past this text to see the maps, videos, and photos...

AS OF THURSDAY (12Nov) I'VE RE-POSTED the every 50m photo tour with changes we made to the course. The older version photos have been deleted. Videos will be left as is for now. They are incorrect (by a bit) after ~2Km, but still useful to show the lay of the land.

See also Herb Wills' regional Facebook page.
Coaches and runners - do not get DQ'd for something avoidable. FHSAA Cross Country Manual. Potential contestants may be found here. Look ONLY for 3A and 2A schools in Region 1! Region 1 3A/2A contestants qualify at 3A and 2A District 1 and 2 competitions.

A look at the Sunnyhill Farms 5Km XC course.
This venue is on PRIVATE PROPERTY, not available for open running.
All grass, cross country spikes are fine!

Course premiere will be the 14 November '09 FHSAA Region 1 Class 3A/2A Cross Country competitions.
Please contact Chiles HS XC/T&F Head Coach Scott Gowan with any questions about the Regional.

Info I have (tweaked slightly per Coach Gowan's Flrunners post in this thread) as to the Regional schedule:
13 Nov
4-6pm - Course preview and packet pickup. Do not arrive any earlier on Friday than 4:00 pm because we will not have the course ready.
14Nov
[Note: FHSAA requires a Regional venue admission fee of $6]
Class 3A Championships
7:30-8:30am - Course preview and packet pickup
8am - 3A Coaches' meeting and packet pickup
9am - Girls' 3A 5Km race
9:45 - Boys' 3A 5Km race
10:45 - 3A awards
Class 2A Championships
9:30am - 2A Coaches' meeting and packet pickup
10:30 - Girls' 2A 5Km race
11:15 - Boys' 2A 5Km race
12:15 - 2A Awards
12:15 - OPEN 5Km [THIS IS A FREE, clock provided, no results, "line up and go, record your own time" race]

Who advances from the Regional to the State Finals Meet?
"The first six placing teams and the top 15 runners in each regional meet shall advance to the FHSAA Finals.
A runner who qualifies in the top 15 and who also is a member of a qualifying team may be replaced in the team lineup [regional meet/FHSAA Finals] by a substitute.
The substitute however, shall not be eligible for individual honors on any subsequent level of competition."

Entrance to the start/finish field on race day is scheduled to be via a Centerville Road gate. Exit via a Roberts Road gate. Parking and team setup will be restricted to the west end of the start/finish field.

As of 8 Nov, Coach Gowan and I have slightly modified the course between ~1950m to ~2600m. I shot and posted all new "every 50m photos." A very roomy start line is set. A massive start funnel and finish "sprint" have been mowed. I flagged the entire course Tuesday during Ida's passage over Tallahassee.
The course was measured NFHS and calibration checked and witnessed. GPS track and player. Latest GPS track, finalized course 12 Nov, 5000m NFHS (+5m).
When runners get to the course, it will be clearly marked all the way around with orange pinflags, as well as some cones and streamer flagging. Any white marks will be flour, so as to not deface the property.
A map with splits (400m, 800m, 1Km, 1200m, 1M, 2Km, 2.5Km, 3Km, 2M, 4Km) is posted below. Those are the splits I normally radio back to the announcer when I'm leading the race on the bike. 1M = 1609m. On the course, these will be marked with pink flags, distances written on them.

NEWER MEASUREMENT NOTES:
I went over to ARP 5 Nov '09 to satisfy my "calibrated measurement" curiosity.
Knowing the FSU Invite was likely measured USATF (tangent) style, rather than NFHS (center of course) style, I started at the marked 5Km finish and rode backward center of course all the way to establish a new start point for HS races. It came up 60m in front of the start line used at the FSU Invite. My experiences at similar "wide tread with lots of turns" venues suggested this was in the ballpark. I then measured NFHS style from the new start. Clicked over to 5.00Km right at the finish as it should, if I'm doing my job. Then went back to the FSU Invite start line, rode tangents (probably a bit too tight in a few spots) and came up 10m short at the marked 5Km finish. If I hadn't shaved those corners so severely, it would likely have been precisely 5.00Km, rather than 4.99Km. Marked splits are off, but that's not as significant as overall precision. My NFHS and USATF tracks. Remember, GPS is NOT useful for precise or repeatable measurement!! I relied upon a calibrated bike computer for these measurement duties.

GPS tracks like these are an assemblage of line segments. Distance-wise they are normally (but not always) short compared to reality. Best plan is to never use them to measure distance (or altitude) if you desire accuracy. The software you feed the track file into adds further mischief. My device normally gives one measurement, the three software packages I've used typically give three different distances. Gee, it's all so scientistic. Add speed and lots of tight turns and oh boy!
I just like the ability to produce a helpful Google Earth mashup map.

Course had its official christening 10 October with the FSU Invite.
Sunrise 10 October was 7:36. FSU Meet Info flyer.

Spikes are fine for all sections of this course.
Event participants need to take care to respect and not trespass on Seminole RC Club's field. Park and stay west of the road heading toward the XC course's starting field. Pick up MORE trash than you bring. The RC Club has been out here since the '80s. I've talked to club president Michael Atkinson about potential conflict with runners out here. He's very understanding. Even has a daughter who ran at the FSU Invite. Let's make this venue work.

Panhandle Championship 5K/3K Course Tour : Gallery will be getting cleaned up a bit...
I'll likely move the 3Km photos out of this gallery and re-do the map. My preference is to never again have kids run Imperial distances (barring the occasional mile). 3Km should replace the 2M. But I'm not in charge here!
For 2007, the 3Km was not run. It was a 2M (turned out to be ~180m long, more like 2.1M).
The 5Km course was revised at the 2M point. It ended up being ~40m long.
As of 2009, that 5Km revision after the 2M point is no longer used. Back to the old way. There is a modification to how the runners get onto the median. And a concrete sidewalk along the north rock wall may now be used. See the video!
Due to these revisions, ignore the 3Km tour beyond ~1200m. The 5Km tour works till you get to ~2M. Sorry 'bout that. I don't know that I'll be driving back to Marianna to "fix" these course tours.
GPS tracks (for mapping purposes, NOT measurement!) are posted here:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4267444 (2M course)

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/4911319 (5Km course)

An every 50 meter photo tour of the bullet-fast October Marianna HS cross country classic.
New 2006: a 3K for MS types.
5K is a clockwise loop. It is essentially unchanged from most past years. Changes in fencing in the stadium area are responsible for minor revision. THIS IS THE SIMPLEST COURSE VARIANT YET.
3K starts anticlockwise on the 5K course (backward, if you prefer), and is an out and back. After the 1435m turnaround, the 3K precisely follows the 5K course to the finish.
Print the map and follow along. (The old map from the 3M course is posted at the end of this gallery.)
Be aware that these photos were shot with the equivalent of a rather wide-angle 27mm lens. What that means is, "things are closer than they appear!"

ARP 5Km XC Photo Tour : An "every 50m" photo tour of the 5Km course. For the most part, I shot a normal focal length. A few shots were shot wide angle when I thought it might add perspective. I would suspect a couple "wides" snuck through.
Look up top for the menu button labeled "Style." Try changing it from "SmugMug" to "Slideshow" for this gallery.

NOTE: I do not intend that these photos necessarily represent exact 50m splits! They are certainly at least quite close as we go along. They were taken beginning at the FSU Invite start line. Later measurements indicate any HS (NFHS rules) competition should begin 60m forward of this start.
See also here for maps, GPS tracks, a VIDEO TOUR, and extra useful links to credit some work others have done.

Lincoln HS 5Km XC Course Tour (Tom Brown Park) : DON'T WEAR SPIKES on this course.
An every 50m photo tour of Lincoln HS Coach Perry Shaw's traditional cross country 5Km season opener. Florida HS XC course are measured "center of course" NOT tangent, per NFHS direction. http://www.nfhs.org/ I'd like to see NFHS and FHSAA join the rest of the world and measure tangents. Till that happens, I'll continue to measure HS courses to the official standard.

Last event on this course was the 15 Sep 07 Lincoln XC race. We used orange pinflags on raceday. No paint, no lime, no marble dust! The only white marks were from Martha White flour - and I hayalped! Here's hoping we can get sponsorship and a visit from this:

http://www.s-w-b-a.com/mwbus.html

For a better viewing experience, be aware you may change the gallery "style" at the top of this page. I recommend "journal" or "all thumbs."

NOTE to coaches an competitors: I recommend against wearing spikes on this course. There is over 1M of running on smooth asphalt. Then there are the quite uneven sections that require attention to footplant. These are reasons I've posted these photos. Check it out for yourself. I just said DON'T WEAR SPIKES on this course.

2007 GPS track here:

Revised for 20 September 2008 races:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6800150
See photo 122 (last photo in this gallery) for a Google Earth screen grab.
Two changes for 2008:
1) minor change just before 800m (Goose Pond to road transition) due to new fence along road
2) reroute between 3800m and 4050m due to drainage rock (SEE PHOTOS 110-121!!)
Because that reroute adds some distance, original photos after about 4Km will be a bit off.
For best viewing, load these .kml files into Google Earth.

Holy Comforter 3Km Course Tour : An every 50m look at the coolest on-campus cross country course in Tallahassee! Some of these shots are wide angle view. In other words, things will appear farther away than they really are.
Mowing variation for 2008 means some of the splits have moved a bit from what's depicted here. It doesn't affect the course enough for me to post all new photos - but who knows?
In any case, if you do a walk through of the course on race day, you'll find the following points marked with brightly ribboned and labeled pinflags:
Start, 400m, 800m, 1Km, 1200m, 1500m, 1M, 2Km, 1.5M, Finish.
Print the map and follow along, ok?

2008 GPS track:

2007: Special thanks to HCES' Dan Hodges and Brandon for the excellent course mowing job. And thanks to HCES Coaches Holly Moody and Tricia Rizza for help with the course marking! After discussing options and possibilities for the new course, all the Holy Comforter http://www.holy-comforter.org/home/home.asp folks were completely accommodating. I think this course will be pleasing to prepared runners, and is extremely spectator friendly. We intentionally designed it so the kids would only have to climb "the hill" once. Even though the distance was increased by ~600m from 1.5M to 3Km, visibility is improved with the 'round the oak and reverse wrap design. As to the distance increase, the kids are still not running as far as Leon County MS races (2M). I think it unwise to continue with the Imperial distances at this point. 2.5Km (half the Varsity distance) or 3Km were my suggestions. AD went with the 3Km. Bravo!
Every square inch is mowed grass. Spikes are definitely ok for kids who'd like that option.
I'd like to hear comments/complaints re the course. From my perch on the lead bike, I couldn't detect any glitches due to the course. It appeared the reverse wrap parallel track was a benefit, rather than being confusing to the runners. There was a lot of cheering between the kids as they passed in opposite directions. The 250m 'round the oak loop gave clear separation before the kids headed in the opposite direction for the finishing 750m. It brought the runners closer to the spectators near the finish area. We got lucky with the weather - overcast and breezy - not the norm for mid-September.
The meets should be easier and bigger each time. Potentially cooler weather, the kids are more fit later in the season, many want a chance to improve upon their times.

With a gallery full of shots, you may find it easier to navigate if you change the gallery "style" (top right) from "smugmug" to "all thumbs." Or "slideshow" or "filmstrip" or . . . you get the idea, it's configurable by you. I usually like "journal."

Miccosukee Greenway XC Course Tour : SCROLL waaay down past all the text to view the photos/maps!

NOTE! NOTE! NOTE! Post 2008 season large cross country meets formerly held here are likely moving away from Miccosukee Greenway. Reportedly ( here and here ) meets will be held at Apalachee Regional Park beginning fall 2009.

A look at this popular course, 50 meters at a time.
Where's this venue? Within the blue rectangle:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=517844
The venue is a small portion of "Miccosukee Canopy Road Greenway," managed by Leon County Division of Parks and Recreation, Mr. Pat Plocek, Director:

http://www.leoncountyfl.gov/PARKS/greenways.asp
Maps of the park:

http://tlcgis6.co.leon.fl.us/website/Parks_SDE/Maps/MiccosukeeGW_Overview.pdf (Entire park)

http://tlcgis6.co.leon.fl.us/website/Parks_SDE/Maps/MiccosukeeGW_EdenfieldThornton.pdf (Section west of I-10)

http://tlcgis6.co.leon.fl.us/website/Parks_SDE/Maps/MiccosukeeGW_I-10Crump.pdf (Section east of I-10)
All trails on the Greenway (including some abandoned ones) are viewable here:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2822399
That GPS track from my 24May07 ride began and ended a few miles from the Greenway. The Greenway's west trailhead is off Fleischmann Road. The east trailhead is ~7M away, off Crump Road. The section south of Miccosukee Road includes singletrack different than the rest of the Greenway.
7Nov07 GPS track of just the 5Km course (anticlockwise) is downloadable, here:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4382312
Load these .kml files into Google Earth for best viewing/mapping.

ABOUT THIS COURSE TOUR:
Most of these photos are taken with my camera's digital equivalent of a "normal" focal length lens, for a natural perspective. I've tried to identify the shots taken with a wide angle equivalent. In those photos, things appear farther away than they really are.

I'm showing two photo tour versions of the 5K. One shows the course running the "East Loop" (between 1470m and 3600m) ANTI-CLOCKWISE. See gallery pages 4-8 for that segment of the course.
The other shows the East Loop CLOCKWISE. See gallery pages 9-13.
The course tour after the East Loop continues on gallery page 13.
NOTE: 1 Dec 07 FACA Senior All-Star Meet will run clockwise, or "highside first."
Miccosukee Madness and FSU Invite normally run clockwise, or "highside first.."
1A/3A Regional FHSAA meet, 4 Nov 06, and the 18 Nov 06 FACA Senior All-Star Meet ran anti-clockwise, or "lowside first."
10 Nov 2007 3A/1A/2A FHSAA Meet (plus the Open 5Km to follow) ran anti-clockwise, or "lowside first."
My preference? Anti-clockwise East Loop, or "lowside first." I think it has better flow, and any soft sand on the highside is easier to run going downhill than up.

Maps posted below. Print the appropriate one and follow along.

You might also try these FSU XC "highside first" 5Km/8Km maps:

http://www.fansonly.com/photos/schools/fsu/sports/c-xc/auto_pdf/BothCourses.pdf

5Km HS course records:
Boys' record - choose between:
Eric Larson's 2007 3A Region 1 Meet 15:18.72

http://fl.milesplit.us/meets/30050/results/59345
Ryder Leary's 2002 FACA Sr. All-Star Meet 15:18.80

http://fl.milesplit.us/meets/3179/results/6086
(Ryder's may have been measured NCAA/tangent, which would make his 5Km ~70m longer.)
Girls' record:
Jenny Barringer's 2004 FACA Sr. All-Star Meet 17:32.70

http://fl.milesplit.us/meets/9104/results/19972

8K course is basically the same as the 5K, but runs two ~4K loops, then turns downhill to finish ~200m down near the 1Km point.

NOTE: I used the NFHS "center of course tread" measurement for these shots. Everyone else (e.g., "community" races, Collegiate) should use the tangent method. That extends the course. Neither is incorrect. Measurement techniques obviously affect attempts to keep meaningful "course records." Of course so does, "Do I have a dog in this hunt?"
I do believe NFHS needs to drop the center of course method. It can be used effectively with a wide course tread and lots of turns to achieve a "legal" short course. But it is still in the 2006 NFHS "Track and Field and Cross Country Rules Book," TFRB06, Rule 9.1, p.66: "Measurement shall be along the middle of the course." As of 2006, FHSAA has not modified that specification/technique.

Back to our Miccosukee Greenway venue. Tangent-measured variants (e.g. FSU Invite) typically throw in a cul-de-sac loop at the top of the hill. This little loop adds about 70m each time it's substituted for a simple left turn down the hill. Mowing width variations also affect the course length and splits.
Please keep these points in mind if some of these photos seem to be different from where you think they should be.

It's the location for the 10 September 2007 Godby Cougar XC Challenge.
As of FRIDAY, 7Aug, the course tread and parking area have been mowed. Thanks specifically to TPRD's Carlos for doing a great job on that again this year! Also to TPRD's Chuck Goodheart, Jimbo Herring, and Herman James for expert assistance.

Where's it at? Venue is (mostly) within the blue rectangle I've traced out here:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=513996
(Better yet, stick with Google Earth, via the MotionBased link, above.)
Be aware as you use the various gmap functions, it may indicate named roads entering the park which do not exist. No worries, you'll just enter via the dirt park roads indicated on the first two maps in this gallery.

PRINT A COURSE MAP AND FOLLOW ALONG, OK?

I shot most of these photos 13 October 2006. Most of these photos were shot at a normal (for humans in our atmosphere) field of view. So the perspective will be life-like. I've tried to label the ones shot at a wider field of view. In those shots, things will appear farther away than they really are. Those ~30 photos were taken when the course was being set up in September. You might recognize those shots by my frequent comments about getting rained on. They were all shot with a wide-angle lens setting.

Maclay School 5K/1.5M Course Tour : NOTE:
These courses were NOT used in 2007/2008/2009! I'm leaving the gallery up, in case the courses are ever used again. Got it?
GPS tracks for 30Oct09 City Meet 5Km and 2M.

An every 50 meter photo tour of the Maclay School home XC course. 2006 offers a 5K and a 1.5M race.

The course was used for the City Championships XC meet, SATURDAY MORNING, 21 October '06. The holding pond was not completely dry. A tiny bit of mud made things quite fun for excited spectators. They lined up to watch participants in the 5 races (and a foolish lead biker) splash and smoosh their way in and out of the pit. Hopefully, some photos will make their way onto the 'net. Send me a link, please!
Took a coupla' rinses to get the mineral deposits out of all those hard-to-reach places. I'm sure some folks are praying for more rain before the District Meet.

Print the course map, then follow along!
Black "X"s indicate the ~360m "STARTING SPUR."
Black DOTS indicate the ~1350m "LOOP."
Black HEARTS indicate the ~580m "FINISHING SPUR" for the 5K runners.
(The 5K athletes run THREE LOOPS, then exit on finishing spur. The 1.5M athletes run ~1.5 LOOPS, then finish directly east 64m on the track.)

1200m is the turn off Aenon Church Road onto the Mogul Trail;
3k (2nd loop) is about the same as the 250m point;
3M is the giant stump as you turn off the loop toward the finish;
5k is the small stump as you're heading toward the beach 70m south of final turn.
